should i sell my soul to the corporate devil?
i recently started work as a paralegal at an ethnically diverse law firm. however, the corporate culture (actually its a small private firm managed by one man) is manipulative and selfish. there are no boundries as far as work accountability is concerned. our meetings are basically focused on assigning blame. and the co-workers are also selfish. if we work late hours, they “sneak in”food without asking (even politely) the new person (one other person besides me). secondly my immediate supervisor has an extremely flexible schedule due to her kid and comes and goes as she pleases, and takes days off without any notice or reason. while, i’m expected to pick up on her work and get the blame too. boss has mentioned many times in meetings that i am available to work more hours since i dont have children. 3rd everyone is allowed to give me work. 4th i commute 2 1/2 hrs each day and work 6 days a week. i want to confront my boss but cant afford to lose the money. is this normal?should i stay?
Revenge is a dish best served cold…in other words, plan. Plan on finding another job which has a better location and better perspectives. Then, once your situation is secured, you can always leave your current job with a one day notice, especially without finishing any work that are on deadline. This is not being mean to them, it’s just karma.

100 Words Per Minute: Tales from behind Law Office Doors $2.86 100 Words Per Minute-Tales From Behind Law Office Doors presents an intimate look inside the quirky world of law offices. The stories of tyrant and tired litigators along with their devoted, though sometimes devious secretaries come alive through a series of essays, punctuated by quick poetic jabs. The author’s career spans over twenty-five years of law office work, from naïve clerk typist in non-profit law, to stressed-out secretary in small plaintiff and large corporate firms, and finally to slightly elevated but no less conflicted office manager. “The hook of my connection to legal work was so gentle that I never noticed when it actually went in, twisted, and then lodged itself for the remainder of my working years.” Weaving humor and pathos together, 100 Words Per Minute takes a hard look back at the author’s unintentional career in the legal field, offering a raw perspective on uncelebrated office workers whose stories are rarely if ever told. |

Anonymous Lawyer $16 A wickedly funny debut novel about a high-powered lawyer whose shockingly candid blog about life inside his firm threatens to destroy himHe’s a hiring partner at one of the world’s largest law firms. Brilliant yet ruthless, he has little patience for associates who leave the office before midnight or steal candy from the bowl on his secretary’s desk. He hates holidays and paralegals. And he’s just started a weblog to tell the world about what life is really like at the top of his profession.Meet Anonymous Lawyer—corner office, granite desk, and a billable rate of $675 an hour. The summer is about to start, and he’s got a new crop of law school interns who will soon sign away their lives for a six-figure salary at the firm. But he’s also got a few problems that require his attention. There’s The Jerk, his bitter rival at the firm, who is determined to do whatever it takes to beat him out for the chairman’s job. There’s Anonymous Wife, who is spending his money as fast as he can make it. And there’s that secret blog he’s writing, which is a perverse bit of fun until he gets an e-mail from someone inside the firm who knows he’s its author.Written in the form of a blog, Anonymous Lawyer is a spectacularly entertaining debut that rips away the bland façade of corporate law and offers a telling glimpse inside a frightening world. Hilarious and fiendishly clever, Jeremy Blachman’s tale of a lawyer who lives a lie and posts the truth is sure to be one of the year’s most talked-about novels. |
